Mary Shaffner is the Founding Executive Director of District of Columbia International School. She led the effort to build the school serving as its Board Chair and organizational lead during the planning years. She then moved into the role of ED with ultimate responsibility for the success of the IB, Language Immersion middle and high school. DCI opened in 2014-15 with 210 students and will grow to 1500 students. In 2018-19 DCI serves 1060 students in the 6-11th grade. DCI has received a Tier 1 Public Charter School Board rating, it’s IB World School certification for the Middle Years, Career and Diploma Program and moved into it’s permanent home at Delano Hall on the Walter Reed Campus. DCI is the first school to establish a feeder pattern for elementary public charter schools in DC and was created by the five DC language immersion elementary schools. In 2012, Ms. Shaffner left her position as Executive Director of Washington Yu Ying PCS, the Chinese immersion school, to pursue opening DCI. From 2008 until 2012, she was the Founding Executive Director of Yu Ying where she successfully led the school from its opening. Yu Ying achieved financial and educational success under her leadership, with PCSB Tier 1 rating, IB World School certification, and the purchase of DCI’s permanent home at 220 Taylor Street and built extensive waitlists. She successfully led and managed the business, operations, financial and outreach activities of the school since efforts to establish Yu Ying began in 2005. She has more than 25 years experience in management and marketing in both the nonprofit and private sectors. She has an MBA and a BA in International Affairs from George Washington University. She has called the District of Columbia her home for thirty years. She speaks conversational Chinese but her two children, one who attends Yu Ying and one at DCI often correct it for her. In her spare time she likes to be outdoors in nature - hiking, biking, diving, swimming, kayaking and adventuring with family and friends.
