Katia Raina

English Teacher

I come to DCI from Camden, New Jersey, where I first fell in love with urban education teaching High School English and Creative Writing. I am also a writer. I have an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Through this program I got to read and analyze hundreds of children’s novels and write hundreds of pages of my own, honing my writing craft under the mentorship of amazing authors. Before teaching, I tried my hand at a publishing career, supporting aspiring and already published authors by helping polish their own manuscripts until they sparkled. I had also worked as a journalist for newspapers and news sites, writing about local politics, environment, crime, schools and more. All these jobs were incredibly exciting. But they didn’t come close to teaching, which is the true work of my heart. Before all that, I immigrated here from Russia, right around the time the Soviet Union fell apart.
I am a passionate believer in social justice. I also believe in love. And in magic. I am thrilled to be here, working with this incredible community of thinkers and doers, to make great things happen!
